Which bank to choose for payments from foreign clients

Valid as of 22 October 20263 min read

No bank is "the best" everywhere: the branch matters as much as the brand. Pick a bank that opens a business account in dinars and foreign currency for auto-entrepreneurs, with an international card on the foreign currency account, and that handles SWIFT and Payoneer transfers without fuss. Ask it the eight questions below before you open the account.

Since Bank of Algeria Circular 2024/01Circulaire 2024/01 du 30 janvier 2024 de la Banque d'Algérie (non publiée ; d'après Algérie Eco), passed on by ANAE, an auto-entrepreneur can open a business account with three documents and no trade register (guide 6). If a branch asks you for a trade register entry, mention this circular.

Eight questions to ask the branch

  1. Do you open a business account in dinars and foreign currency for auto-entrepreneurs, on the auto-entrepreneur card?
  2. What kind of foreign currency account: trader or non-trader professional? (The rules on using it differ, guide 10.)
  3. Which documents do you need, and how long does opening take?
  4. What’s your form for the article 57 project declaration (guide 7)?
  5. Do you receive Payoneer and PayPal transfers into this foreign currency account? How many days do they take?
  6. What are the fees: account keeping, receiving an international transfer, the card?
  7. Do you offer an international Visa or Mastercard linked to the foreign currency account, and at what price?
  8. Do you have online banking to track incoming transfers and download statements?

The methods

Key points

  • The branch matters as much as the bank: compare two.
  • Insist on a business account in dinars and foreign currency, with an international card on the foreign currency account.
  • Send a test transfer before your first big invoice.
