The auto-entrepreneur status is your legal way in to invoicing foreign clients in your own name. You register online on the portal of ANAE, the national auto-entrepreneur agency, and you get an answer within three working days.
Methods in this guide
- LegalSign up on the ANAE portal
Who can sign up
Law 22-23Loi 22-23 du 18 décembre 2022 portant statut de l'auto-entrepreneur (JO n° 85 de 2022) of 18 December 2022 created the status. To use it, you need to:
- be of legal working age and live in Algeria;
- do an activity on the list set by Executive Decree 23-197Décret exécutif 23-197 du 25 mai 2023 (activités éligibles et inscription au registre national de l'auto-entrepreneur, JO n° 37 de 2023). It has more than 1,500 activities, including about 300 under “digital services and related activities”, such as freelance graphic designer, writer or copywriter, and call-centre agent for platforms;
- expect to earn less than 5,000,000 DA of turnover a year (guide 13).
Regulated professions aren’t on the list, and neither is running a platform. If you want to build a marketplace or sell an online service to people in Algeria, you’ll need a company.
Do you have a salaried job and want to freelance on the side? None of the sources we read settle this. Ask ANAE before you sign up.

Law 22-23Loi 22-23 du 18 décembre 2022 portant statut de l'auto-entrepreneur (JO n° 85 de 2022) and Executive Decree 23-197Décret exécutif 23-197 du 25 mai 2023 (activités éligibles et inscription au registre national de l'auto-entrepreneur, JO n° 37 de 2023) set out this route.
- Cost: no registration fee that we know of.
- Timing: an answer within three working days (Decree 23-197, art. 17Décret exécutif 23-197 du 25 mai 2023 (activités éligibles et inscription au registre national de l'auto-entrepreneur, JO n° 37 de 2023), p. 11).
Step by step

- Fill in the form: your identity exactly as it appears on your biometric ID card, your national ID number (NIN), address, wilaya and commune.
- Pick your activity from the drop-down list. Choose the one that really describes your work, because it’s what your bank and the tax office will see.
- Upload your documents: both sides of your ID card, proof of address less than three months old, an ID photo and, for some activities, a diploma or a criminal record extract.
- Submit. You get your auto-entrepreneur number by text and email, then you download your card from your account.
If ANAE turns you down, you have 30 days to appeal (Decree 23-197, art. 24Décret exécutif 23-197 du 25 mai 2023 (activités éligibles et inscription au registre national de l'auto-entrepreneur, JO n° 37 de 2023), p. 12).
